A lot of British expats living abroad work from home, running bed and breakfast, chambres d’hôte, and gîtes. It’s hard work, but it’s a way to make a living from your new home.

For those rave reviews on travel sites, a little knowledge is key to giving visitors a truly fabulous holiday. So it’s best to find out as much as you can about your guests before they arrive. That way you can tailor your chambre d’hôte or gîte to meet their exact needs with some thoughtful extra touches, from practical facilities to luxurious treats.

If your paying guests are chez vous for a wedding, make sure you’ve got plenty of wine glasses available so they can toast the happy couple before they head for the church or mairie. And don’t forget the driver – colourful glasses really brighten up a glass of juice.

If your visitors are honeymooners, they’ll appreciate luxury furnishings such as exquisite bedding, an array of scatter cushions and opulent throws. If you’ve gone for the extra luxury of super king size beds, you’ll almost certainly need to order your bedding online from the UK. Spoil them even more, go for Egyptian cotton bedding and towels.

France is a popular destination for cookery courses and wine tours. Food and drink tourists will really appreciate specialist cooking equipment such as a quality knife block, non stick pan sets, stockpots and casseroles, kitchen scales or small kitchen appliances to try their hand at creating those delicious regional dishes with fabulous local ingredients.

If you promote your accommodation as family-friendly, pushchairs and highchairs always come in useful for visiting families with babies and toddlers. Young families are usually well equipped but won’t be bringing all the kids’ toys on holiday. Why not have a selection of books, toys and traditional British board games for rainy day activities and TV-free evenings en famille? If you’ve enough outdoor space, think of a set of goalposts to keep active kids busy. A slide in the garden is a lovely extra for entertaining younger guests or grandchildren while your guests are relaxing on the terrace or preparing dinner.

Many holidays abroad are based around activity breaks, especially in famous walking and cycling regions of Europe. A supply of good quality waterproof outdoor jackets hanging by the back door won’t go amiss to help guests enjoy the fresh air and scenery whatever the weather. They might want to drive somewhere and take a picnic, armed with the picnic hamper you can lend them. So they’ll be thrilled at the thoughtful loan of a Sat-Nav to make sure they find their way back!
